General FAQ's and Sales related questions

  • Q

How do I transfer my UK domain away?

  • A

You need to ask the new domain host for their IPSTAG so that you can then change the TAG to theirs in the domain control panel under "Change Nominet TAG".

Please enter the TAG there and it will be shortly updated by Nominet, ready for the new domain hosts to transfer the domain in fully.

    Domain
A domain name is an easy-to-remember address that can be translated by DNS into server's IP address. Popular domain's extensions include .com, .net, .org, .biz, .info, name, .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk, .eu and more. Domain names are unique and are registered within a central database.

  • Q

    What is a CNAME?

  • A

A CNAME record is a DNS record which points a name to another name, instead of directly to an IP address like an A record does. Note you cannot use a CNAME to point to a sub directory, specific file or URL but only to a domain or a sub-domain. eg domain.com, www.domain.com, sub.domain.com is FINE; domain.com/mypage.html, domain.com/subdirectory/page.html is NOT.

  • Q

Will I be advised of the renewal of my domain?

  • A

Yes you will. We will start emailing you in respect of this 30 days before the date of renewal and allow you the option to either renew the domain straight away, on the date of renewal, or allow the domain to lapse. If you wish to renew the domain, then you will also need to select a payment method to cover the cost of renewals. Please note that domain renewals are charged at the same rate as current new registrations.

  • Q

How can I transfer a domain to another UK Hosting account?

  • A

Log in to your UK Hosting account and go to "Manage Domain Names". Choose the domain name you want to transfer and then select "Inter-customer Transfer". You'll need to know the email address of the user you're transferring to and they will need to confirm the transfer before it completes. Neither user is charged for this service.

  • Q

How do I lock/unlock my domain?

  • A

For domains where domain locking is available, log in with the domain name and it's password to the domain control panel and select the 'Domain Locking' option. If you lock your domain, then all requests to transfer your domain to another registrar will fail automatically; confirmation requests will not even be sent to the admin contact. We lock all new domains and transferred-in domains by default; you only need to unlock a domain if you are intending to transfer it to another registrar. The status of the lock on the domain will also be shown here.

  • Q

I'm transferring a domain to UK Hosting and it doesn't appear inside the Domain Control Panel list. Why is it not shown?

  • A

Domains will only appear inside the Domain Control Panel once the domain transfer fully completes and not before that point. If you have any queries about a specific domain transfer, raise a Customer Service ticket via the 'Contact Customer Services' section of your control panel.

  • Q

I've registered a domain with you, but it's still available elsewhere and not showing on the WHOIS database as registered. Why is that?

  • A

All new registrations take up to 48 hours to show on the WHOIS database. All domain registrations are done instantly and if after 48 hours, the domain is still showing as available on the WHOIS, please raise a Customer Service ticket via the 'Contact Customer Services' section of your control panel.

  • Q

How long will it take to transfer my domain?

  • A

YIf you ordered a new domain name through us, it can take up to 48 hours for it to be completed. If you are transferring an existing domain name to UK Hosting, it can vary from domain type and TLD. If the TAG has been changed on a '.uk' domain once the transfer has been requested from your control panel the transfer should complete within 24 hours. For high level domains like '.com' for example after the transfer request email has been replied to and authorised it can take anywhere from 24 hours up to 7 days to complete fully.

As a general rule we advise to allow at least 48 hours for a domain transfer, but be advised that any DNS changes also take time to propagate too.

  • Q

I have just bought a domain name and it isn't showing up in my web browser.

  • A

Domain registry databases can take between 24-48 hours to be updated so even though your domain has been registered it may still show up on WHOIS or "domain checkers" as being available. Also, during this period, your domain name may not work in a web browser and email using the domain name may now work. If your domain is still not working after a full 48 hours please contact support.

  • Q

Can I have a sub domain?

  • A

Sub domains allow you to have a new web address for separate areas of your website. Setting up a sub domain with your account is easy with the UK Hosting Control Panel. Simply log into your Control Panel and select 'Web Tools' from the next menu select 'Sub Domains'.

To add a sub domain you need to enter what you want the sub domain to be called and which directory it will point to.

For example you might want the sub directory:

    support.yourdomain.com

  • Q

Where the files for the sub domain are held in?

  • A

    www.yourdomain.com/support

To delete a sub domain or change the directory that it points to you simply need to edit the details listed in the 'Edit Sub Domains' section.

You can also set up subdomains as A-records in the DNS Management section. Using this your subdomain can point to a specific IP address.

  • Q

Do my domains have to be transferred into UK Hosting in order to use a hosting account?

  • A

Customers do not have to transfer their domains into us in order to use their hosting space, provided the nameservers for those domains can be moved over to ours. Our nameservers are ns.mainnameserver.com (79.170.40.2) and ns2.mainnameserver.com (79.170.43.3).

Please note that if domains are not transferred over to us, you'll need to arrange for the renewal of those domains separately with whomever they reside with, and those domains will not enjoy the full range of free services that our domain registration customers obtain by default.

  • Q

If I do nothing, will my domain be renewed?

  • A

Yes, to ensure that you do not lose your domain we will attempt to renew it for a 2 year period, if you do not actively select to renew or cancel the domain. If you do not wish to renew a domain it is vital that you select not to renew the domain from within your control panel in the "Renew Services" section.

  • Q
